M81 and M82 are locked in a gravitational struggle, a mere 12 million light-years from us. This deep image, made from 25 hours of data, shows M81's enhanced spiral arms. M82 is forming stars so violently that it glows in X-rays. Their last close encounter likely caused these dramatic features.
