The Flash Spectrum of the Sun
NASA APOD · Constantine Emmanouilidi
COSMIC MESSAGE
During the brief total phase of a solar eclipse on November 3rd, the Sun's visible spectrum briefly changed from absorption to emission. This moment was captured over Gabon in equatorial Africa using a telephoto lens and diffraction grating. With the Moon blocking the Sun's disk, the dominant absorption spectrum of the solar photosphere disappeared. What remained, spread by the diffraction grating, revealed the emission spectrum of the chromosphere.
