Gibbous Europa

NASA APOD · reprocessed by Ted Stryk
COSMIC MESSAGE

This image from the Galileo spacecraft shows Jupiter's moon Europa in a gibbous phase. Europa is nearly the same size as Earth's Moon, and its surface is covered in bright ice, crisscrossed by long cracks. Darker patches likely contain a mix of ice and dirt. Raised terrain is visible near the terminator, where it casts shadows.
