The Gegenschein Over Chile

NASA APOD · Yuri Beletsky
COSMIC MESSAGE

The gegenschein, German for "counter glow," is a faint patch of light visible in the night sky directly opposite the Sun. It is caused by sunlight scattering off tiny interplanetary dust particles. These millimeter-sized particles are splinters from asteroids and orbit in the plane of the planets. This image from Chile captures one of the more striking views of this phenomenon.
