The Missing Craters of Asteroid Itokawa

NASA APOD · ISAS, JAXA
COSMIC MESSAGE

Asteroid Itokawa, photographed by the Hayabusa probe in 2005, is missing its craters. Most asteroids are covered in impact craters, but Itokawa's surface is smooth. Scientists think this is because Itokawa is a rubble pile, a collection of rocks and ice loosely held together by gravity. Craters might simply fill in or disappear on such a surface.
