M1: The Crab Nebula
NASA APOD · Martin Pugh
COSMIC MESSAGE
The Crab Nebula, also known as M1, is the debris from a massive star that exploded in 1054, an event witnessed by astronomers. This sharp, ground-based telescopic view uses narrowband data to show emission from ionized oxygen and hydrogen atoms in blue and red. These colors trace the tangled filaments within the still-expanding cloud.
