Saturn reached its 2015 opposition on May 23, meaning it was opposite the Sun in Earth's sky. At this time, Saturn is closest and brightest for the year, making for spectacular telescopic views. The rings also show a strong brightening, an effect known as the opposition surge or Seeliger Effect, caused by direct illumination.
