The Medusa Nebula

NASA APOD · European Southern Observatory
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Medusa Nebula, also known as Abell 21, is a planetary nebula about 1,500 light-years away in Gemini. Its braided filaments of gas are the remains of a low-mass star, much like our Sun, nearing the end of its life. This transformation marks the star's transition from a red giant to a hot white dwarf. The nebula's serpentine appearance gives it its popular name.
