Gamma-ray Rain from 3C 279
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
This visualization shows gamma-ray photons from active galaxy 3C 279, detected by the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. The gamma-rays, with energies up to 50 billion electron volts, originated from a supermassive black hole 5 billion light-years away. Each gamma-ray "drop" is an expanding circle, with its color and size determined by its measured energy. The image shows a flare from the black hole as an increasing number of these gamma-ray detections.
