Charles Messier compiled a list of objects that were definitely not comets while hunting for them in the 18th century. Number 27 on his list, M27, is a planetary nebula, though it is not a planet. This gaseous emission nebula forms as a Sun-like star sheds its outer layers at the end of its life. It may appear round and planet-like through a small telescope.
