Sun Storm: A Coronal Mass Ejection

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

This image from the SOHO spacecraft shows a Coronal Mass Ejection, or CME, lifting off the Sun's surface. CMEs are enormous bubbles of magnetic plasma blasting into space. Direct sunlight is blocked in the inner part of the image, replaced by a simultaneous ultraviolet view. The field of view extends over two million kilometers from the solar surface.
