LIGO Detects Gravitational Waves from Merging Black Holes

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

On September 14, 2015, the LIGO observatories in Washington and Louisiana detected gravitational waves for the first time. These waves matched predictions for two large black holes merging in a distant galaxy. The resulting new black hole vibrated momentarily, sending ripples through spacetime.
