The Flash Spectrum of the Sun
NASA APOD · Len Fulham
COSMIC MESSAGE
On March 9, during a total solar eclipse, the Sun's visible spectrum changed from absorption to emission. This flash spectrum, captured from Ternate, Indonesia, shows the moment the lunar disk blocked the Sun's overwhelming light. What remains, spread by a diffraction grating, is the emission spectrum of the solar chromosphere.
