A Crumbling Layered Butte on Mars

NASA's Curiosity rover on Mars encountered these unusual mounds, called Murray Buttes. This mosaic image shows one of the last buttes Curiosity passed on its journey up Mount Sharp. These 15-meter tall structures are made of ancient, water-deposited layers of dried and crumbling sandstone. They offer clues about Mars's past watery environments.
