COSMIC MESSAGE
Sunrise at the South Pole is unique, following months of darkness with months of sunshine. It can take weeks for the Sun to fully rise, unlike the hours it takes at mid-latitudes. Polar sunrise is caused by Earth's tilt as it orbits the Sun, not by Earth's rotation. Although an airless Earth at the pole would first see the Sun at an equinox, the atmosphere's lensing effect and the Sun's size alter this.
