Red Aurora Over Australia

COSMIC MESSAGE
A solar storm in 2012 caused a spectacular red aurora over Australia. Particles from active sunspot region 1402 showered Earth, exciting oxygen atoms high in the atmosphere. When these excited electrons returned to their ground state, they emitted a red glow. If the oxygen atoms had been lower in the atmosphere, the aurora would have appeared green.
