NGC 1316: After Galaxies Collide

NASA APOD · Steve Mazlin
COSMIC MESSAGE

NGC 1316, an enormous elliptical galaxy in the constellation Fornax, is about 75 million light-years away. Astronomers suspect it collided with its smaller neighbor, NGC 1317, causing the far-flung loops and shells of stars seen in this deep image. The light from this violent cosmic encounter reached Earth some 100 million years ago.
