The Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory, LIGO, detected two black holes merging. This event, GW170104, created a new black hole 49 times the mass of the Sun. It fills a gap in the range of black hole masses we have observed so far. This was the third such detection of gravitational waves.
