COSMIC MESSAGE
Charles Messier, an 18th-century astronomer, kept a list of objects that were definitely not comets. This is number 27 on that list, known as M27. Modern astronomers identify it as a planetary nebula, created as a sun-like star sheds its outer layers at the end of its life.
