Mountains of Dust in the Carina Nebula

The Carina Nebula is a cosmic battleground where newly formed stars are winning against the dust they were born from. The energetic light and winds from these massive stars are evaporating and dispersing the dusty stellar nurseries. These pillars, informally known as Mystic Mountain, appear to be dominated by dark dust, but are mostly clear hydrogen gas. They are much thinner than air and only appear as mountains due to the vast distances involved.
