The Heart Nebula in Hydrogen, Oxygen, and Sulfur

NASA APOD · Peter Jenkins
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Heart Nebula, IC 1805, is a large emission nebula that gets its glow from the massive, hot stars within its newborn star cluster, Melotte 15. Stellar winds and radiation from these stars also shape the gas and dust clouds. This image maps the light from hydrogen, oxygen, and sulfur atoms in the nebula. The Heart Nebula is located about 7,500 light-years away in the constellation Cassiopeia.
