The Helix Nebula from CFHT

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Helix Nebula, also known as NGC 7293, is a gas cloud created at the end of a star's life. It is one of the brightest and closest examples of a planetary nebula. From our perspective, the expelled outer gases look like we are looking down a helix. The central core will become a white dwarf star, and its energetic light causes the gas to glow.
