Ultima and Thule

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

On January 1, the New Horizons spacecraft encountered Ultima Thule, a Kuiper Belt object 6.5 billion kilometers from the Sun. This historic image, taken just 30 minutes before closest approach, shows Ultima Thule as a contact binary. It is likely the result of a gentle collision shortly after the birth of our Solar System, making it a relic from that era.
