HESS Telescopes Explore the High-Energy Sky

COSMIC MESSAGE

These enormous swiveling eyes are the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) Observatory. The observatory is composed of four 12-meter reflecting-mirror telescopes surrounding a larger 28-meter mirror. They detect Cherenkov radiation, flickers of blue light emitted when charged particles from distant gamma rays move faster than light in air. These telescopes explore the high-energy sky.
