The Star Streams of NGC 5907

NASA APOD · R Jay Gabany
COSMIC MESSAGE

Grand tidal streams of stars surround the galaxy NGC 5907, also known as the Splinter or Knife Edge Galaxy. These arcing structures extend over 150,000 light-years from the edge-on spiral. They are the ghostly remains of a dwarf galaxy that was torn apart and merged with NGC 5907 over four billion years ago.
