GW190521: Unexpected Black Holes Collide

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The gravitational wave event GW190521 came from two black holes colliding. Their masses, 66 and 85 solar masses, were unexpected. Black holes below about 65 solar masses form from supernova explosions. Black holes above about 135 solar masses are thought to come from very massive stars collapsing. The formation of these intermediate-mass black holes is still a mystery.
