Mammatus Clouds over Mount Rushmore
NASA APOD · Laure Mattuzzi
COSMIC MESSAGE
These unusual mammatus clouds passed over Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, USA, where the heads of four former US Presidents are carved. Unlike flat-bottomed clouds, which form when moist, calm air rises and cools, bumpy mammatus clouds form as moist, cool air sinks. This image was captured by a tourist in early September.
