Colors: Ring Nebula versus Stars

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Ring Nebula, also known as M57, emits light primarily in a few distinct colors, mainly hydrogen (red) and oxygen (blue). This image uses a prism-like diffraction grating to separate these colors, showing them as nearly overlapping images to the left of the center. This technology allows us to see the individual colors of the nebula and surrounding stars, revealing their spectral makeup.
