An Unusual Globule in IC 1396
NASA APOD · Bernard Miller
COSMIC MESSAGE
The Elephant's Trunk Nebula, part of IC 1396, is a star-forming region where gas and dust clouds take on interesting shapes. A bright, young star, too distant to pose any threat, sculpts these forms with its energetic light. This radiation erodes the dust of a dark cometary globule, pushing away gas and dust. Jets and particle winds from the star also contribute to shaping the nebula.
