COSMIC MESSAGE
3200 Phaethon, a near-Earth asteroid, is recognized as the source of the meteoroid stream responsible for the annual Geminid meteor shower. Most meteor shower parents are comets, but Phaethon is a rocky, sun-baked asteroid with a 1.4-year orbital period. Its closest approach to the Sun is well within the orbit of Mercury.
