COSMIC MESSAGE
Sometimes lightning occurs high above the ground, near space. Red sprite lightning, like the one shown here, has only been studied for about 25 years. These sprites can start as 100-meter balls of ionized air, shooting down from about 80 kilometers altitude. Scientists are still researching the exact mechanisms that cause red sprite lightning.
