Messier 51, the Whirlpool Galaxy, is an intriguing pair of interacting galaxies, the 51st entry in Charles Messier's famous catalog. Its spiral arms and dust lanes sweep in front of its smaller companion galaxy, NGC 5195. Some 31 million light-years distant in the constellation Canes Venatici, M51 is a classic example of a spiral galaxy.
