This composite image traces Mars's clockwise loop through Gemini and Cancer from September 2024 to May 2025. Mars did not reverse its orbit, but its apparent motion, called retrograde motion, is due to Earth overtaking it. This phenomenon is a visible reminder of our planet's faster orbit around the Sun.
