Unexplained Shocks Around a White Dwarf Star

RXJ0528+2838 is a recently discovered white dwarf star, seen here producing unexplained shock waves. White dwarfs are the dense remnants of stars, slowly cooling after their cores have ceased fusion. This particular white dwarf, located 730 light-years away, presents a puzzle with its surrounding energetic phenomena. Most white dwarfs simply fade, but this one shows an unusual activity.
