COSMIC MESSAGE

If your eyes could see gamma rays, the Moon would appear brighter than the Sun. This image from the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory shows just that. The Moon appears bright in gamma rays because cosmic rays, high-energy particles, strike its surface and produce gamma-ray photons. EGRET, the most sensitive instrument of its kind, mapped these high-energy emissions.
