The Sun constantly emits a stream of charged particles called the solar wind. This wind travels outward through the Solar System at hundreds of miles per second. Early evidence for its existence came from observing comet tails, which always point away from the Sun due to this flow. This image shows the Sun's corona, where the solar wind originates, as seen during a total solar eclipse.
