Two NASA spacecraft, Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Pathfinder, were approaching Mars in 1997. Pathfinder was set to land in July, and Global Surveyor to orbit in September. Recent studies, spurred by these missions, indicated that Martian weather is more chaotic than previously thought. Hubble Space Telescope images from March 1997 showed abrupt swings between hot, dusty conditions and cold, cloudy ones on Mars.
