Comet Hyakutake passed close to Earth in 1996. This image, taken by the Hubble Space Telescope, shows the inner coma, or atmosphere, of the comet. The coma is about 14,000 kilometers across, roughly the diameter of Earth. It forms as the comet's icy nucleus warms and evaporates when it approaches the Sun.
