Olympus Mons on Mars is the largest volcano and second-highest mountain in the solar system. It is a shield volcano, similar in shape to the Hawaiian volcanoes, but far greater in scale. Its base is about 600 kilometers across, and its peak rises 25 kilometers above the Martian plains.
