In September 1967, the Surveyor 5 lander made a soft landing on the Moon's Mare Tranquillitatis. The lander, equipped with cameras and soil samplers, slid several feet down the inside edge of a small crater. The Surveyor missions were designed to determine if lunar landing sites were safe for human missions. Surveyor 5's footpad dug a trench as it slipped.
