Shadow Of A Comet

COSMIC MESSAGE
Comet Hale-Bopp, visible even in city skies in 1997, cast a shadow against the Sun's ultraviolet haze. The SOHO observatory's SWAN instrument captured this false-color image on March 8, 1997. It shows how the comet's material blocked the scattered solar ultraviolet light.
