Comet Hale-Bopp, seen here over Val Parola Pass in Italy, was a spectacular sight in 1997. It was bright enough to be seen even from light-polluted areas. The comet displayed a prominent white dust tail, made of larger particles reflecting sunlight, and a blue ion tail, formed by solar wind interacting with ionized gas from the comet's nucleus.
