The NEAR spacecraft became the first artificial moon of an asteroid on February 14, 2000. This image shows asteroid 433 Eros from an orbit of about 200 miles. Features as small as 100 feet across are visible, including a three-mile-wide crater near Eros' narrow waist. Enticing layers and grooves are visible within the crater rim.
