New Shocks For Supernova 1987A

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

In 1987, astronomers saw Supernova 1987A explode in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Mysterious rings of material around the expanding debris glowed from the intense light of the explosion. The interior ring has now sprouted four new hotspots, as shown in these Hubble Space Telescope images from February 2000. These hotspots mark where the supernova's shock wave is colliding with denser gas.
