Light bridges are planet-long structures that form on the Sun in a matter of hours. They can appear as large sunspot groups decay. This image, one of the sharpest ever taken of the Sun, shows two light bridges, each 5,000 kilometers long. They connect moderately dark penumbral regions across the cool abyss of two dark sunspot umbras.
