Halley's Nucleus: An Orbiting Iceberg
NASA APOD · MPAE
COSMIC MESSAGE
What does a comet's nucleus look like? The Giotto spacecraft flew by Halley's Comet in 1986, giving us a good look. This image, generated from Giotto's data, shows a dark, potato-shaped object, about 15 kilometers long. It's an icy, rocky remnant from the early solar system, spewing gas and dust as it gets closer to the Sun.
