The Helix Nebula from CFHT

NASA APOD · J.-C. Cuillandre (CFHT Staff), CFH12K CCD Camera, CFHT
COSMIC MESSAGE

The Helix Nebula, also known as NGC 7293, is a planetary nebula 450 light-years away. It formed at the end of a Sun-like star's life, with the star's outer gases expanding into space. The remnant central core, which will become a white dwarf, emits energetic light that makes the expelled gas glow. Our own Sun may look like this one day.
