Approaching Asteroid Eros

The NEAR-Shoemaker spacecraft was scheduled to make the first controlled touchdown on an asteroid. While it was not expected to survive the impact with asteroid 433 Eros, its primary mission during descent was to capture close-up images. Scientists hoped to see surface features as small as 10 centimeters across, providing unprecedented detail of the asteroid's terrain.
