A Sky Full Of Hydrogen
NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE
Interstellar space is filled with tenuous clouds of neutral hydrogen gas. A hydrogen atom consists of one proton and one electron, both of which spin. When the electron in a hydrogen atom flips its spin from parallel to anti-parallel with the proton, it emits a radio wave. This 21-centimeter radio emission allows astronomers to map the distribution of hydrogen throughout the galaxy.
