Comet Linear (WM1) Brightens

NASA APOD
COSMIC MESSAGE

Comet C/2000 WM1 (LINEAR) brightened considerably as it approached the Sun in late 2001 and early 2002. Discovered over a year prior when it was faint and beyond Jupiter, it developed distinct tails. This image, a 30-second exposure from the Curtis Schmidt 0.6-meter Telescope in Chile, captures the detail in its emerging dust tail. The comet was visible with binoculars in the southern skies.
